Basbousa is a beloved Middle Eastern dessert known for its sweet, moist texture. This version of basbousa is prepared without oil, making it lighter yet just as delicious.
Ingredients
1 cup semolina
1 cup sugar
1 cup yogurt
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ cup milk
½ cup blanched almonds (for decoration)
For the syrup: 1 cup sugar, 1 cup water, and a few drops of rose water
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
In a mixing bowl, combine the semolina, sugar, yogurt, baking powder, and milk. Mix until smooth.
Pour the mixture into a greased baking dish and spread evenly.
Score the surface in a diamond or square pattern and place an almond in the center of each piece.
Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown.
While the basbousa is baking, prepare the syrup. In a saucepan, combine the sugar and water, and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and let it simmer for 10 minutes. Add a few drops of rose water for flavor.
Once the basbousa is done baking, remove it from the oven and pour the hot syrup evenly over the surface.
Let it cool for at least 30 minutes before serving. Cut into pieces and enjoy!
