How to Make Delicious Awama (Sweet Dumplings)
Awama, also known as sweet dumplings, is a popular Middle Eastern dessert that is loved for its crispy exterior and sweet syrupy finish. This delightful treat is perfect for gatherings or simply as a sweet indulgence at home.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup water
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon yeast
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- Oil for frying
- For the syrup:
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon rose water (optional)
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine the yeast, sugar, and warm water. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Once the yeast mixture is ready, add it to the flour along with the remaining water. Mix until you have a smooth dough.
- Cover the dough with a clean cloth and let it rise in a warm place for about an hour, or until it doubles in size.
- In the meantime, prepare the syrup. In a saucepan, combine sugar, water, and lemon juice. Bring to a boil and simmer for about 10 minutes. Add rose water, if desired, and set aside to cool.
- Once the dough has risen, heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat. Use your hands to form small balls of dough and gently drop them into the hot oil.
- Fry the awama until they are golden brown, turning them occasionally for even cooking. Once cooked, remove them and drain on paper towels.
- While still warm, dip the fried awama into the syrup, ensuring they are well-coated. Serve warm or at room temperature.
