Semolina and Roasted Milk Basbousa
Basbousa is a delightful Middle Eastern dessert made with semolina and often soaked in a sugar syrup, making it a sweet treat that’s perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients
- 1 cup semolina
- 1 cup roasted milk (or milk powder)
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup yogurt
- 1 cup coconut flakes (optional)
- 1/2 cup melted butter
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- For the sugar syrup:
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
- In a mixing bowl, combine the semolina, roasted milk, sugar, yogurt, coconut flakes, melted butter, and baking powder. Mix well until all ingredients are thoroughly combined.
- Pour the mixture into a greased baking dish and smooth the top with a spatula.
- Score the top of the mixture into small squares or diamond shapes using a knife.
- Place blanched almonds or pine nuts in the center of each piece if desired.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until the top is golden brown.
- While the basbousa is baking, prepare the sugar syrup. In a saucepan, combine sugar, water, and lemon juice. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and let simmer for about 10 minutes. Add vanilla extract and remove from heat.
- Once the basbousa is done baking, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the hot sugar syrup over it, allowing it to soak in.
- Let it cool for at least 1 hour before serving. Enjoy your delicious basbousa!
