Jareesh with Chicken and Yogurt
Jareesh is a traditional dish popular in the Middle East, particularly in the Arabian Peninsula. This dish combines crushed wheat with chicken and yogurt, resulting in a deliciously creamy and hearty meal. Perfect for family gatherings or special occasions, jareesh is not only flavorful but also nutritious.
Ingredients
- 2 cups jareesh (crushed wheat)
- 1 whole chicken, cut into pieces
- 4 cups water
- 1 cup plain yogurt
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 tablespoons ghee or butter
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin (optional)
- Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Rinse the jareesh under water and soak for at least two hours.
- In a large pot, melt the ghee or butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until golden brown.
- Add the chicken pieces to the pot, seasoning with salt and pepper. Cook until the chicken is browned on all sides.
- Add the soaked jareesh and water to the pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and let it simmer for about 1.5 hours, stirring occasionally, until the jareesh is soft.
- Once the chicken is cooked and tender, remove it from the pot. Shred the chicken into pieces, discarding the bones.
- Return the shredded chicken to the pot, and stir in the yogurt. Adjust the seasoning with more salt and pepper if needed. Let it simmer for an additional 10 minutes.
- Serve hot, garnished with fresh parsley and a side of yogurt if desired.
